Although options can be risky due to their leverage and time decay, they can also be very rewarding. Fundamentally there are two kinds: puts and calls, and we shall spend the rest of this article talking about call options.

The truth on trading “credit spreads”…You will learn why it is so important if you do not know how to correctly handle your option positions. Even though it is a well known trade we will take a good look at what can happen using this particular spread. This seems to be a good trade, but until you work with this trade, you will not know the high risk it can be. If it is traded alone this options “credit spread” can be very risky. By trading it alone I mean that it is not being protected by another option trade.

Historically, finding high yield covered calls was hit and miss at best, and incomplete and laborious at worst. It involved thinking about volatile stocks and then entering a lot of data into a spreadsheet to see which ones were paying the best. You’d then have to go check another data source or two to find out if there was an earnings release or ex-dividend date before option expiration. Slow and tedious.

I’ve been playing the trading options game for about a decade now, and I’ve made a lot of friends along the way. I’ve met numerous option traders, probably somewhere in the hundreds, all working along side me on this long time endeavor to achieve success on the stock market and the truth is, only a handful were making money. It makes me wonder why there are so many people out there playing this game and investing in the stock market when most of them only lose their capital.

With a full understanding of the risks of trading options and futures, speculative investors need to follow certain rules in order to be profitable long term. Interestingly enough, the most important aspect of making money with options has nothing to do with the mechanics of trading, but instead the emotions of it. That being said, having the right discipline when trading real money is critical to being a successful options trader. You will learn this quickly when you start to learn options trading.

Being that the iron Condor is a negative Vega strategy, this might just be the perfect time to use this income option spread. Lately, the volatility has been dropping and the markets have become a calmer place to be. This makes it much easier to manage this option spread.

Today we’ll be discussing the differences between investing with stocks and options. Let’s first tackle the less complex investing vehicle, stocks. Most of the world already knows, but in case you don’t, stocks are directional trading vehicles. If we are long the stock, then we make money when the prices of the asset rises, and we lose capital as the underlying asset drops in price. We can also sell a stock short in which the profit comes when the stock falls. In any case when investing with stocks, the direction is what matters. We don’t need to worry about market volatility or time.
