When requesting information on an account that is being collected on by your creditor or debt collector, you can send what is known as a debt verification letter. I do not usually recommend sending debt verification letters because they only require the creditor or debt collector to prove that they have your name and address. This information does not provide you protection or any valuable information.

This unfortunate scenario happened two times to a New Mexico woman who had no connection to the Target Bank account or to the collectors employed by Target. Because the debt buying industry has grown in leaps and bounds since the 1980′s, cases like this are becoming more and more common. Although technological advances and an increase in the size of debt buyer firms have created a more profitable industry, the industry also holds the record for having the highest number of complaints filed against them with the Federal Trade Commission. Regulators are not able to deal with every case, but the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act grants citizens important rights in debt disputes.
